Johann Sebastian Bach sits at the foundation. He didn’t invent harmony or counterpoint, but he systematized them so completely that they became the grammar of Western music. Joseph Haydn
Joseph Haydn comes next as the great organizer. He more or less invented the modern symphony and string quartet, not by accident but by relentless experimentation.
Haydn established form as something elastic but reliable—sonata form especially—giving later composers a framework sturdy enough to stretch or break. Without Haydn, “classical style” wouldn’t really exist as a thing to react against.
